A rare devotional panel by Olivuccio di Ciccarello, contrasting the Madonna of Humility with the narrative of Eve's temptation.
This panel painting by Olivuccio di Ciccarello, a painter active in the Marche region of Italy during the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, presents a complex theological narrative. The work is divided into two distinct registers. The upper section depicts the Madonna of Humility, a popular devotional subject of the period, showing the Virgin seated on the ground rather than on a throne. She cradles the Christ Child, who reaches towards her, while surrounded by a celestial halo of stars and attendant angels. The use of gold leaf provides a luminous background, typical of the International Gothic style, which prioritises decorative grace and linear elegance over naturalistic spatial depth.
The lower register introduces a stark contrast, depicting the Temptation of Eve. Set against a dark, sombre ground, Eve is shown reclining, holding the forbidden fruit while the serpent coils nearby. This juxtaposition serves to contrast the fall of humanity through Eve with the redemption offered through the Virgin Mary, often referred to in medieval theology as the second Eve. The inclusion of the heraldic shield in the lower right corner suggests this piece was commissioned by a specific patron, likely for private devotion or a family chapel.
Olivuccio di Ciccarello is known for his refined handling of drapery and the gentle, elongated features of his figures. The composition relies on a vertical hierarchy, separating the heavenly realm from the earthly narrative of original sin. The fine tooling of the gold ground and the delicate application of tempera reflect the high level of craftsmanship expected in Italian devotional art of the early Quattrocento. This print captures the texture of the original wood panel, preserving the subtle colour shifts in the Virgin's robes and the stark, dramatic lighting of the lower scene.
