A classic Dutch Golden Age genre scene by Jan Steen, depicting a young woman suffering from lovesickness as a physician examines her pulse.
Jan Steen, a master of Dutch Golden Age genre painting, frequently explored the theme of lovesickness, a common subject in seventeenth-century medical and moral discourse. In this work, a young woman sits in a state of melancholy, her hand resting against her head, while a physician checks her pulse. The scene is staged within a dimly lit interior, typical of Steen's domestic narratives. The physician, dressed in dark attire, leans forward with a knowing expression, suggesting he recognises the true nature of her ailment is not physical, but emotional.
Steen employs a careful arrangement of objects to provide context for the narrative. A foot warmer sits beneath the woman, a common motif in Dutch art that often carried connotations of romantic longing or domestic idleness. To the left, a small brazier and a discarded fan lie on the floor, while a sleeping dog rests on a cushion to the right, adding to the quiet, heavy atmosphere of the room. Through an open doorway, a glimpse of a bright, exterior courtyard provides a contrast to the shadows of the interior, drawing the eye toward the light.
Steen is recognised for his ability to blend humour with moral instruction. His figures are rendered with a focus on texture and light, from the sheen of the woman's gold-coloured skirt to the soft fur trim of her jacket. The composition is balanced, with the three figures forming a triangular relationship that directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the patient and the doctor. This print captures the narrative precision and the characteristic warmth of Steen's palette, offering a window into the domestic life and cultural preoccupations of the Dutch Republic.
