A refined colour aquatint depicting a playful moment of courtship in a garden setting, executed with the technical precision of late eighteenth-century French printmaking.
The Lover Surprised is a fine example of the colour aquatint technique, a medium that Charles-Melchior Descourtis mastered during the late eighteenth century. Based on an original composition by Antoine-François Callet, this print captures a lighthearted moment of courtship set within a secluded garden. The scene depicts a young woman playfully covering the eyes of her seated companion, who holds a letter and a miniature portrait, suggesting a narrative of romantic correspondence.
Descourtis utilised multiple copper plates to achieve the subtle gradations of tone and colour present in this work. The soft, atmospheric lighting creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye toward the central figures while the surrounding foliage remains in shadow. The inclusion of a stone pedestal topped with a small sculpture provides a classical element, common in the period, which balances the informal nature of the interaction. The textures of the clothing, the delicate petals of the flowers, and the rough bark of the tree trunk demonstrate the technical precision required for this printing process.
This work reflects the taste for sentimental and pastoral themes that permeated French art before the Revolution. The composition relies on a gentle diagonal arrangement, guiding the viewer from the foreground details to the figures and finally to the background architecture. By employing a refined palette of muted greens, soft browns, and subtle flesh tones, the artist maintains a sense of harmony throughout the image. The print serves as a record of the sophisticated printmaking practices of the era, where technical skill was applied to convey narrative intimacy. It remains a representative piece of the late Rococo aesthetic, focusing on themes of leisure, affection, and the private sphere.
