A precise watercolour study of the harbour at Port Vendres by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, capturing the geometric clarity of the Mediterranean coast.
During the final years of his life, Charles Rennie Mackintosh moved to the south of France, where he produced a series of watercolours documenting the coastal towns of the Pyrenees-Orientales. This work depicts the harbour at Port Vendres, a location that captured his interest due to its geometric clarity and Mediterranean light. Mackintosh applied his architectural training to the composition, organising the scene through a series of rigid, intersecting planes and sharp shadows.
The foreground features a stone quay, rendered with precise, controlled washes that define the texture of the masonry and the rhythmic pattern of the stairs. His use of line is deliberate, providing a structural framework that contains the softer, more fluid application of pigment in the water and sky. The boats, moored along the shore, are reduced to simplified forms, their hulls and masts echoing the vertical and horizontal lines of the surrounding buildings.
Unlike his earlier, more decorative work associated with the Glasgow School, these later watercolours demonstrate a shift toward objective observation. He avoids excessive detail, preferring to capture the essential geometry of the harbour. The palette is restrained, relying on ochre, terracotta, and cool blues to convey the specific atmosphere of the French coast. The composition is balanced by the contrast between the dark, reflective surface of the water and the sun-bleached surfaces of the buildings. This piece offers a view into the artist's late career, where his focus moved from interior design and furniture to the direct, analytical study of the built environment. It remains a clear example of his ability to translate architectural principles into the medium of watercolour, maintaining a sense of order and clarity throughout the image.
