A traditional Japanese hanging scroll depicting the legendary Empress Jingū with her attendants, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This hanging scroll depicts the semi-mythical Empress Jingū, a figure from Japanese history traditionally credited with leading an expedition to the Korean peninsula. Kōsai Hokushin presents the Empress in a commanding posture, standing with a bow in hand, which signifies her martial authority and legendary status as a warrior-ruler. She is accompanied by two figures: a woman seated to her left, who holds an infant, and an elderly man seated in the foreground. The man, likely representing the statesman Takenouchi no Sukune, wears traditional armour and holds a fan, providing a contrast to the Empress in both age and attire.
The composition follows the conventions of Japanese scroll painting, where figures are arranged against a neutral, unadorned background to focus attention on their roles and identities. The artist employs a refined line quality, particularly in the rendering of the Empress's robes and the delicate facial features of the figures. The colour palette remains restrained, using soft tones that have aged gracefully on the silk support. The inclusion of the infant, often identified as the future Emperor Ōjin, links the narrative to the imperial lineage and the foundational myths of the Japanese state.
Kōsai Hokushin, an artist associated with the Ukiyo-e tradition, demonstrates a clear command of historical iconography. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the narrative elements to communicate the status of the subjects. The mounting of the scroll, featuring a patterned textile border, frames the central image and maintains the aesthetic balance typical of Edo-period hanging scrolls. This piece offers a window into the cultural fascination with historical and legendary figures that persisted throughout the nineteenth century in Japan.
