The Lay Buddhist Vimalakirti - Yiran Xingrong (Itsunen Shōyū)

A refined ink and colour portrait of the Buddhist figure Vimalakirti, created by the influential Obaku Zen monk Yiran Xingrong in 1659.

This work depicts Vimalakirti, the central figure of the Vimalakirti Sutra, a lay practitioner known for his wisdom and ability to engage with both secular and spiritual realms. Yiran Xingrong, a Chinese monk who travelled to Japan and became a founding figure of the Obaku Zen school, employs a style that bridges Ming dynasty traditions with the emerging aesthetic of the Obaku sect in Nagasaki. The figure is rendered with fine, controlled ink lines, capturing a sense of calm authority. He holds a fly-whisk, a traditional symbol of Buddhist teaching and the clearing away of mental obstructions.

The composition is balanced by a large, circular halo behind the figure, which provides a clean, negative space that draws the eye to the subject. The surrounding silk mount features a repeating floral pattern, typical of the period's decorative arts. To the left, a column of calligraphy provides context and poetic reflection, a common feature in East Asian ink painting where text and image share equal weight. The muted colour palette, dominated by the warm, aged tone of the silk, creates a sense of antiquity and reverence.

Yiran Xingrong was instrumental in introducing Chinese painting techniques to Japan during the seventeenth century. His work often reflects the scholarly and monastic culture of the time, prioritising clarity of form and philosophical depth. The figure of Vimalakirti is presented not as a distant deity, but as a human teacher, reflecting the Buddhist emphasis on the potential for enlightenment within everyday life.
