A powerful 1923 lithograph by George Bellows, addressing the brutal reality of racial violence and mob justice in early twentieth-century America.
George Bellows produced this lithograph in 1923, responding to the prevalence of racial violence and extrajudicial killings in the United States. The work depicts a mob gathered around a burning figure, a scene that confronts the viewer with the brutality of lynching. Bellows utilises high-contrast chiaroscuro to illuminate the central act of violence, casting the surrounding crowd in deep, murky shadows. The light source, emanating from the fire, creates a stark silhouette of the victim against the darkness, while the figures of the perpetrators remain partially obscured, suggesting a collective, anonymous guilt.
As a member of the Ashcan School, Bellows often turned his attention to the grittier aspects of urban and social life. This print, however, moves beyond the everyday observations of city streets to address a specific, harrowing social crisis. The title, inscribed at the bottom, serves as a grim commentary on the justifications used by mobs to bypass the judicial system. The composition is tightly framed, forcing the viewer into close proximity with the event. The heavy, gestural marks of the lithographic crayon contribute to the raw, urgent quality of the image. By choosing to render this subject in black and white, Bellows strips away any potential for aesthetic distraction, focusing entirely on the stark reality of the scene. This work remains a significant example of American social commentary in the early twentieth century, reflecting the artist's willingness to engage with uncomfortable and difficult subject matter through his chosen medium.
