An eighteenth-century etching by Anton Maria I Zanetti depicting the Last Supper, characterised by fine line work and dramatic architectural framing.
This etching by Anton Maria I Zanetti depicts the biblical scene of the Last Supper. Zanetti, a Venetian aristocrat and collector, was known for his technical skill in printmaking, particularly his work with chiaroscuro woodcuts and etchings that captured the spirit of the Venetian masters. In this composition, the figures are arranged around a table, with Christ positioned to the right, his form illuminated against the architectural backdrop of a large stone column and a vaulted archway.
The artist employs a series of fine, hatched lines to define the shadows and textures of the drapery, the stone floor, and the expressions of the disciples. The scene is framed by a rounded arch, which provides a sense of depth and enclosure. A dog sits in the foreground, a common inclusion in period depictions of domestic or social gatherings, adding a touch of naturalism to the scene. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the period, with strong contrasts between the light-catching surfaces of the figures and the deep recesses of the room.
Zanetti was a significant figure in the eighteenth-century art world, acting as a connoisseur and intermediary between Italian artists and international collectors. His prints often sought to replicate the painterly qualities of works by artists such as Parmigianino or Tintoretto. This particular print demonstrates his ability to translate complex narrative scenes into the medium of etching, maintaining a balance between the individual characterisation of the disciples and the overall structural integrity of the scene. The work is a fine example of the graphic arts in Venice during the eighteenth century, reflecting the period's interest in classical composition and the technical possibilities of the etching needle.
