A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Nicolò della Casa, capturing a section of Michelangelo's Last Judgment with anatomical precision.
This engraving by Nicolò della Casa represents a section of the monumental Last Judgment fresco painted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel. Working in the mid-sixteenth century, della Casa translated the muscular, dynamic forms of the original mural into the precise medium of copperplate engraving. The print captures the chaotic energy of the scene, focusing on the figures surrounding the cross and the instruments of the Passion.
The composition is defined by a dense arrangement of figures, each rendered with anatomical precision. Della Casa employs fine, parallel hatching to model the musculature of the bodies, creating a sense of volume and weight despite the two-dimensional surface. The figures appear to float upon clouds, a device used to suggest a celestial space. The artist pays close attention to the expressive gestures of the figures, who interact with the heavy wooden cross and other symbols of the crucifixion.
As a printmaker, della Casa was part of a group of artists who sought to disseminate the visual language of the Italian High Renaissance to a wider audience. By reproducing Michelangelo's work, he allowed collectors and fellow artists to study the complex poses and dramatic tension that defined the master's style. The engraving demonstrates the technical skill required to replicate the scale of a fresco on a smaller, portable format. The lines are controlled and deliberate, reflecting the rigour of sixteenth-century printmaking techniques. This work serves as a record of the original fresco, capturing the intensity of the figures as they navigate the divine space. The monochrome palette focuses the viewer on the interplay of light and shadow across the human form, stripping away the distraction of colour to reveal the underlying structure of the composition.
