A late fourteenth-century Italian devotional panel depicting the Lamentation, featuring tempera and gold leaf in a traditional Gothic style.
This work, attributed to the anonymous artist known as the Master of the Fogg Pietà, represents a characteristic example of late fourteenth-century Italian painting. The composition follows the traditional iconographic structure of the Lamentation, where the figures of the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and other mourners gather around the body of Christ after the descent from the cross. The artist employs a gold-leaf background, a technique common in the period to suggest a celestial or non-temporal space, which contrasts with the earthly grief expressed by the figures.
The figures are arranged in a shallow, stage-like space, typical of the period before the full adoption of linear perspective. Their gestures are stylised, conveying sorrow through conventional poses: hands pressed to cheeks, heads bowed, and the careful cradling of the body. The use of tempera allows for precise, linear definition of the drapery folds and the anatomical details of the figures. The colour palette is dominated by the contrast between the cool blues of the Virgin's robes, the warm pinks and ochres of the surrounding figures, and the reflective brilliance of the gilded ground.
Framed within a quatrefoil-shaped panel, the work retains its original decorative border, which features floral motifs in blue and gold. This integration of the frame into the overall design is a hallmark of the period's approach to devotional objects. The painting reflects the transition from the rigid formality of earlier Byzantine-influenced styles toward a more humanised, emotive narrative, while maintaining the decorative qualities inherent in Gothic art. The surface exhibits characteristic craquelure, consistent with the age of the tempera medium on a wooden support, providing a physical record of its history.
