This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham, dated 1545, depicts the second labour of Hercules: the destruction of the Lernaean Hydra. As a member of the 'Little Masters', a group of German printmakers known for their small-scale, highly detailed works, Beham demonstrates his technical precision through the fine hatching and cross-hatching used to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the forest setting.

The composition follows the classical narrative where Hercules, wielding his club, is assisted by his nephew Iolaus, who cauterises the stumps of the Hydra's heads with a torch to prevent them from regenerating. The Latin inscription at the top, 'HERCVLES VNA CVM IOLAO HYDRAM OCCIDIT', identifies the scene clearly. Beham's monogram, 'ISB', appears in the upper right corner alongside the date. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical accuracy, typical of the period's interest in classical antiquity. Beham was a prolific printmaker in Nuremberg, and his work was widely circulated across Europe.
