A detailed 1771 engraving depicting a busy eighteenth-century kitchen scene, capturing the daily activities of staff and the preparation of food.
This engraving, published in London in 1771, captures a bustling domestic scene within a large, active kitchen. Jean Baptiste Michel, a French engraver who worked extensively in Britain, demonstrates his technical precision in this work. The composition is divided into distinct zones of activity: the preparation of game and fish in the foreground, the cooking process near the large hearth in the background, and the presence of figures who appear to be overseeing the culinary operations.
The scene is filled with period-specific details, from the hanging carcasses of poultry and game to the various copper vessels and earthenware scattered across the floor. The lighting is managed through careful cross-hatching, which creates a sense of depth and volume within the stone-walled space. A central figure, dressed in more formal attire than the kitchen staff, gestures towards the table, suggesting a narrative element common in eighteenth-century genre prints. The inclusion of dogs and the discarded fish on the floor adds a layer of realism to the environment, moving away from the idealised depictions often found in contemporary portraiture.
Michel was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into the medium of print. This work reflects the interest in everyday life and the mechanics of household management that occupied artists and audiences of the period. The print serves as a record of eighteenth-century culinary practices, architecture, and social hierarchy within a domestic setting. The clarity of the line work and the balanced distribution of figures across the frame demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with the print trade in Cheapside during the late eighteenth century.
