A nineteenth-century oil painting depicting the Kedawong sugar factory in Java, capturing the colonial industrial architecture and local activity.
This painting depicts the Kedawong sugar factory, situated near Pasuruan on the island of Java. The work provides a clear view of the industrial infrastructure during the colonial period, featuring the low-slung buildings with characteristic red-tiled roofs. A Dutch flag flies prominently from a pole in the foreground, marking the site as a centre of colonial economic activity. The composition is anchored by a wide, unpaved road leading into the factory grounds, where figures are seen engaged in daily labour, carrying materials and moving across the site.
To the left, a large, rounded mountain rises against a heavy, cloud-filled sky. The artist employs a muted palette to capture the atmospheric conditions of the region, with the light filtering through the clouds to illuminate the dusty path. The foreground includes local figures resting near a white wall, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the backdrop of the industrial facility. The painting belongs to a genre of colonial documentation that recorded the physical development of the Dutch East Indies, focusing on agricultural and industrial sites that were essential to the economy of the time.
Hesselaar captures the specific architectural style of the factory buildings, which were designed to suit the tropical climate. The inclusion of the dog in the foreground and the workers carrying timber adds a narrative quality to the scene, moving it beyond a purely technical record. The work offers a glimpse into the intersection of colonial administration and the physical environment of Java in the nineteenth century, documenting the transformation of the rural terrain into a site of production.
