Lucas Cranach the Elder produced several versions of this classical myth, a subject that allowed him to explore the juxtaposition of contemporary armour and the idealised female nude. In this composition, Paris is depicted not as a classical shepherd, but as a German knight in full sixteenth-century plate armour. He reclines in a wooded setting, observing the three goddesses, Venus, Juno, and Minerva, who appear before him to compete for the golden apple held by Mercury.

Cranach employs a distinct stylistic approach to the figures. The goddesses are rendered with pale, smooth skin and elongated proportions, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the Saxon court. Their poses are graceful, yet they maintain a sense of detachment. Mercury, standing beside them, wears an elaborate, fantastical costume, which contrasts with the metallic sheen of the knight's attire. The background features a dense, dark forest that opens slightly to reveal a distant castle, a common motif in Cranach's work that grounds the mythological narrative within a familiar, northern European context.

The painting demonstrates the artist's technical precision, particularly in the rendering of the armour's reflective surfaces and the fine details of the foliage.
