A detailed 1602 Mannerist painting by Joachim Anthoniz Wtewael, depicting the classical myth of the Judgment of Paris with complex figures and dramatic lighting.
Joachim Anthoniz Wtewael, a master of the Dutch Mannerist tradition, painted this version of The Judgment of Paris in 1602. Executed on copper, the work displays the characteristic precision and smooth finish associated with this medium. The scene depicts the classical myth where Paris, a Trojan prince, is tasked with choosing the most beautiful goddess among Juno, Minerva, and Venus.
The composition is dense and theatrical. Figures are arranged in a complex, overlapping manner that fills the frame, a hallmark of the Mannerist style. Wtewael employs elongated proportions and exaggerated poses to create a sense of artificiality and grace. Mercury is shown descending from above, his presence adding a dynamic vertical element to the otherwise horizontal grouping of figures. In the foreground, a group of reclining deities and satyrs observes the event, their relaxed postures contrasting with the tension of the central decision.
The lighting is dramatic, with deep shadows and highlights that model the musculature of the figures. The palette is dark and moody, typical of the period, yet it allows for the subtle rendering of skin tones and the textures of the surrounding woodland. Wtewael was known for his small-scale, highly finished cabinet paintings, and this work is a prime example of his ability to pack a narrative with numerous figures without sacrificing clarity. The inclusion of animals and a distant landscape provides a sense of depth to the otherwise crowded scene. This print captures the technical skill and the sophisticated, intellectual approach to classical subject matter that defined Wtewael's career in Utrecht.
