A classical Baroque depiction of the mythological Judgment of Paris, featuring the three goddesses and Mercury, painted by Alessandro Turchi.
Alessandro Turchi, a Veronese painter active in Rome, presents a classical mythological narrative in this composition. The scene depicts the moment Paris, a Trojan prince, prepares to award the golden apple to the goddess he deems most beautiful. The figures of Venus, Juno, and Minerva are arranged across the foreground, accompanied by Mercury and a young Cupid. Turchi employs the characteristic lighting of the Seicento, where figures are modelled with a firm sense of volume against a darker, atmospheric background.
The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions. Venus is identified by the presence of Cupid, while Juno is accompanied by her peacock and Minerva by her shield. Turchi demonstrates his training in the Bolognese tradition, particularly the influence of the Carracci, through the balanced arrangement of the figures and the clear, sculptural quality of the anatomy. The palette relies on earthy tones for the setting, contrasted by the deep blues of the drapery and the pale, luminous flesh tones of the goddesses.
This work reflects the period's interest in classical themes, which were frequently commissioned by private collectors for their galleries. Turchi was known for his ability to integrate figures into natural settings, a skill evident in the way the group interacts with the landscape elements. The inclusion of the dog in the foreground adds a touch of domesticity to the divine encounter. The painting is a representative example of the refined, academic style that defined much of the Roman Baroque period, focusing on clarity of form and narrative legibility. The artist's attention to the texture of the fabrics and the subtle expressions of the figures provides a sense of theatricality, typical of the era's approach to mythological subjects.
