A detailed narrative painting by Gerard David depicting the arrest of the corrupt judge Sisamnes, commissioned for the Bruges town hall.
The Judgement of Cambyses is a diptych commissioned for the town hall of Bruges. It depicts the story of the corrupt judge Sisamnes, who accepted a bribe and was subsequently punished by King Cambyses of Persia. This panel shows the arrest of Sisamnes, while the companion piece illustrates his flaying. Gerard David, a master of the Early Netherlandish tradition, employs a precise, observational approach to the figures and the architectural setting.
The composition is structured to guide the viewer through the narrative. On the right, the judge sits in his red robes, surrounded by figures who represent the legal and civic authorities of the period. The king, positioned on the left, gestures towards the judge, signalling the transition from corruption to justice. The inclusion of a dog in the foreground and the tiled floor adds a sense of domestic reality to the scene, a common trait in Northern European painting of the late fifteenth century. Through the archway, one observes a glimpse of a town square, which mirrors the urban environment of Bruges where the work was originally displayed.
David demonstrates a mastery of texture and light, particularly in the rendering of the heavy fabrics and the metallic sheen of the armour worn by the king's attendants. The work functions as a moralising image, intended to remind magistrates of their duty to uphold the law without bias. The figures are rendered with individualised features, suggesting that the artist may have used contemporary citizens as models. This attention to detail, combined with the clear, linear perspective, creates a scene that feels both immediate and timeless. The painting remains a significant example of civic art from the late medieval period, reflecting the values and social structures of the time.
