A detailed Mughal miniature by Basavana, depicting a scene from the Tuti-nama where a hunter captures a mother parrot while her young feign death.
This miniature originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a collection of fifty-two stories narrated by a parrot to its mistress over successive nights. The manuscript is a foundational work of the Mughal school, produced during the reign of the Emperor Akbar. Basavana, a master painter of the imperial workshop, demonstrates his early command of narrative composition and naturalistic detail in this scene.
The composition depicts a hunter perched in a tree, ensnaring a mother parrot while her young fall to the ground. The narrative logic is clear: the young birds feign death to escape capture, a clever ruse that allows them to fly away once the hunter is distracted. The artist employs a vertical perspective, common in Persian-influenced Indian painting, to organise the forest setting. The foliage is rendered with individualised leaves, and the hunter is shown in a dynamic posture, his attention fixed on the net.
Basavana uses a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the red of the hunter's turban and the soft greens of the canopy. The inclusion of a fox observing from the lower left adds a layer of tension to the scene, suggesting the predatory nature of the environment. The text, written in Nasta'liq script, is integrated into the page, framing the illustration and providing the necessary context for the viewer. This work reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and the observational style that would define the Mughal aesthetic under Akbar's patronage. The attention to the behaviour of the animals and the human figure's physical engagement with the tree demonstrates the artist's interest in capturing specific moments of action within a larger moral tale.
