A late etching by Samuel Palmer, depicting a tranquil rural scene under a crescent moon and star, executed with fine cross-hatching and atmospheric detail.
The Homeward Star is a late etching by Samuel Palmer, produced in 1879. It reflects the artist's lifelong preoccupation with the pastoral tradition and the poetry of Virgil. The composition depicts a quiet evening scene where figures gather at a table outside a cottage, surrounded by the dense, textured foliage characteristic of Palmer's mature graphic style. Above the rugged, mountainous horizon, a crescent moon and a single bright star dominate the sky, casting a sense of stillness over the rural setting.
Palmer utilised a dense network of cross-hatching and fine lines to build up the shadows and light within the scene. This technique creates a sense of atmosphere that feels both grounded in the English countryside and elevated by a visionary quality. The figures are integrated into the environment, suggesting a harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world. The work demonstrates the artist's technical mastery of the etching needle, as he manipulated the copper plate to achieve varying degrees of darkness and luminosity.
This print belongs to a series of etchings inspired by the Eclogues of Virgil, a project that occupied Palmer during his final years. Rather than a literal translation of the text, the work captures the mood of the classical pastoral, translating ancient themes into a distinctly British visual language. The attention to detail in the trees, the sheep, and the architectural elements of the cottage provides a sense of physical presence, while the celestial elements introduce a contemplative dimension. It is a work that rewards close observation, revealing the layers of mark-making that define Palmer's unique approach to printmaking.
