A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the Holy Family, featuring the Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child alongside Saint Joseph and John the Baptist.
This print depicts the Holy Family in a moment of domestic intimacy. The Virgin Mary is shown nursing the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph and an elderly figure, likely Saint Elizabeth, observe the scene. A young John the Baptist reaches towards the infant Jesus, completing the group. The composition is set against the base of a classical column, a common device in seventeenth-century religious art to provide architectural weight and a sense of historical grounding.
Henri Picquot, a French printmaker active during the seventeenth century, demonstrates a high level of technical proficiency in this work. The etching employs varied line weights to define the folds of drapery and the textures of skin. The cross-hatching creates deep shadows, particularly in the background and the garments, which gives the figures a sculptural quality. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the Baroque period, focusing the viewer's attention on the central interaction between mother and child.
The print is based on a painting by Nicolas Chappron, as indicated by the inscription 'Chappron pinxit' at the bottom left. This collaborative process between painter and printmaker was standard practice for disseminating religious imagery across Europe. The inclusion of 'Avec Privilege du Roy' confirms that the work was produced under royal authority, a common mark of quality and legal protection for publishers in France at the time. The work reflects the period's interest in humanising sacred figures, presenting them in a setting that feels accessible yet dignified. The careful rendering of the figures' expressions and the naturalistic posture of the nursing infant show a clear focus on emotional resonance through precise anatomical observation. This print remains a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition that defined the visual culture of the era.
