A 1913 oil painting by Pavel Filonov, showcasing his Analytical Art style through a fragmented, dense composition of rural figures and animals.
Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This approach prioritised the organic growth of a composition, where the artist treated the canvas as a living organism. In The Hog, painted in 1913, Filonov applies this philosophy to a scene of rural life, transforming a mundane subject into a dense, multi-layered visual experience.
The composition is crowded with figures and animals, their forms merging into one another through a process of fragmentation and reconstruction. The central hog is rendered with dark, earthy tones, contrasting with the lighter, spotted animal below. Surrounding them are human figures whose limbs and clothing are broken into geometric planes. Filonov avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, crystalline structure that forces the viewer to examine every inch of the surface. His brushwork is deliberate, building up the image through small, cell-like units of colour that suggest a constant state of flux.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the primitive and the elemental. By stripping away conventional representation, Filonov seeks to reveal the internal energy of his subjects. The palette is dominated by muted browns, ochres, and greys, punctuated by sharper tones that define the edges of the figures. The result is a work that feels both chaotic and highly ordered, typical of Filonov's output during the pre-revolutionary period. His rejection of pure abstraction in favour of this analytical, figurative style allowed him to maintain a connection to the physical world while pushing the boundaries of how that world could be depicted on a two-dimensional plane. This print captures the density and raw energy of the original oil painting, offering a clear view into the artist's rigorous technical process.
