A scene of rural life by Henry Herbert La Thangue, depicting harvesters resting by a fire at dusk.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a central figure in the Newlyn School, a group of artists who adopted the French plein-air method to document the lives of rural workers. In this work, the artist captures a quiet moment during the harvest season. The scene is illuminated by the glow of a small fire, which casts long shadows and highlights the textures of the hay and the clothing worn by the labourers.
The composition is anchored by the tripod structure over the fire, creating a sense of domesticity within the field. La Thangue employs a technique that balances the harsh reality of manual labour with a sympathetic observation of his subjects. One figure rests against a stack of hay, exhausted from the day, while others attend to the preparation of a meal. The cool tones of the evening sky contrast with the warm, flickering light emanating from the centre of the group.
La Thangue studied at the Royal Academy Schools and later in Paris, where he was influenced by the naturalism of Jules Bastien-Lepage. This painting reflects his interest in the dignity of agricultural life, a common theme in his output during the 1890s. The brushwork is deliberate, capturing the atmospheric conditions of the dusk. By focusing on the specific details of the workers' posture and the humble tools of their trade, the artist provides a record of late nineteenth-century rural existence in Britain.
