A classic Neo-Impressionist work by Charles Angrand, featuring a rural harvest scene rendered through the precise application of colour dots.
Charles Angrand, a French painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with optical colour theory. The painting depicts a rural scene of agricultural labour, where figures are engaged in the collection of wheat. The composition is defined by the systematic application of small, distinct dots of colour, a technique known as Pointillism. This method relies on the viewer's eye to blend the pigments optically, creating a luminous quality that differs from traditional brushwork.
Angrand employs a palette dominated by golden yellows, soft greens, and pale blues to capture the atmospheric conditions of a summer day. The light appears to shimmer across the field, softening the contours of the harvesters and the surrounding trees. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on urban subjects, Angrand often turned his attention to the quiet, rhythmic nature of rural life in Normandy. The figures are rendered with a sense of anonymity, their forms integrated into the surrounding environment through the consistent application of colour dots. The horizon line is kept low, allowing the expansive sky to occupy a significant portion of the canvas, which contributes to the sense of openness and stillness inherent in the scene.
This work demonstrates the artist's technical precision and his interest in the scientific principles of light and colour. By avoiding the mixing of pigments on the palette, Angrand achieved a specific clarity of tone that defines his contribution to the movement. The painting remains a clear example of the rigorous approach adopted by artists who followed the theories of Georges Seurat, yet it retains a personal, contemplative quality that distinguishes Angrand's output from other practitioners of the style.
