A sixteenth-century Mughal miniature painting from the Tuti-nama, depicting a courtly scene with figures in traditional attire.
This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript produced during the early Mughal period. The work depicts a scene from the eighth night of the narrative, where a handmaiden petitions for the execution of a prince. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century Mughal court art, employing a flattened perspective that allows for the clear arrangement of multiple figures within a domestic interior.
The artist, Lalu, utilises a palette of saturated pigments, including vermilion, ochre, and deep blues, to define the garments and the patterned textiles that anchor the scene. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, characteristic of the period, and are positioned to guide the viewer through the narrative tension of the courtly interaction. The architecture is suggested through simple geometric forms, while the floor is covered in a floral carpet, a common motif in Persian and Indian manuscript illumination.
Below the image, the Persian text provides the necessary context for the visual drama above. The integration of calligraphy and painting is a hallmark of the Tuti-nama, which served as a pedagogical and entertainment tool for the Mughal court. This piece demonstrates the synthesis of indigenous Indian styles with Persian influences, a process that defined the early development of the Mughal school. The attention to detail in the clothing, the expressive gestures of the figures, and the balanced use of colour demonstrate the technical proficiency of the workshop. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the sixteenth-century Mughal Empire, capturing a moment of narrative urgency through traditional artistic techniques.
