Juan Gris, born José Victoriano González-Pérez, was a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism. This work, painted in 1926, demonstrates his characteristic approach to the still life genre. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this piece employs a more structured, architectural arrangement of forms. The guitar is deconstructed into its essential geometric components, yet it remains recognisable through the inclusion of specific identifiers such as the sound hole, the neck, and the curved silhouette of the body.

Gris often incorporated elements of collage or simulated textures into his paintings. Here, the surface is treated with a variety of finishes, from the flat, matte blocks of blue and pale green to the faux-marble patterns at the base. The composition is anchored by a vertical orientation, which allows the artist to play with the relationship between the object and the surrounding space.
