A masterful Baroque depiction of the biblical parable, showcasing Fetti's fluid brushwork and expressive narrative style.
Domenico Fetti, a painter active in Rome and Mantua, produced this interpretation of the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan during the early seventeenth century. The work displays the characteristic painterly technique associated with Fetti, who was influenced by the Venetian tradition, particularly the works of Titian and Veronese. His application of paint is fluid and rapid, creating a sense of movement that defines the figures and the surrounding environment.
The composition focuses on the physical exertion of the Samaritan as he lifts the injured man onto his donkey. The figures are positioned in the foreground, set against a backdrop of wind-swept trees and an expansive, cloudy sky. Fetti uses light to draw attention to the interaction between the two men, while the background figures, representing the priest and the Levite who passed by, are rendered with less detail, receding into the distance. The palette consists of earthy tones, punctuated by the soft pinks and whites of the clothing, which catch the light.
Fetti often painted small-scale works on panel, which allowed for a more intimate engagement with the subject matter. This piece reflects the Baroque interest in emotional narrative and the human condition. The brushwork remains visible throughout the surface, providing a tactile quality to the foliage and the drapery. By placing the figures within a natural setting, Fetti grounds the spiritual lesson in a tangible, physical reality. The work is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is studied for its contribution to the development of the cabinet painting genre in Italy.
