A detailed etching by Jean-François Millet depicting three women gathering wheat in a field, capturing the reality of rural labour.
This etching captures the arduous labour of three women gathering leftover stalks of wheat after the main harvest. Jean-François Millet, a central figure of the Barbizon school, focused his attention on the rural working class. His work avoids the idealised depictions of peasant life common in the nineteenth century, choosing instead to present the physical strain and humble reality of agricultural work.
The composition is grounded by the three figures, whose bent postures create a rhythmic repetition across the foreground. Their forms are heavy and solid, suggesting the weight of their task. In the background, the artist includes the bustling activity of the main harvest, which contrasts with the isolation of the gleaners. The sky is filled with a flock of birds, adding a sense of scale to the open field.
Millet utilised the etching medium to explore light and shadow through varying densities of line. The cross-hatching on the clothing and the ground provides texture, while the open areas of the paper suggest the bright, dusty atmosphere of a late summer day. This print reflects the artist's deep familiarity with the French countryside, where he lived and worked for much of his career. By choosing to depict the poorest members of the rural community, Millet brought a quiet dignity to a subject often overlooked by his contemporaries. The work remains a clear observation of social hierarchy and the repetitive nature of manual labour.
