An eighteenth-century allegorical engraving by Pietro Bonato depicting a putto with architectural tools and plans, rendered in a classical style.
This print, titled The Genius of Architecture, is an etching and engraving by the Italian printmaker Pietro Bonato, dated 1765. The composition is presented within a horizontal oval frame, a common format for allegorical prints of the eighteenth century. It depicts a young, nude putto, representing the personification of architecture, seated upon a fallen classical column. The figure holds a detailed architectural plan, suggesting the intellectual rigour required for the discipline.
Surrounding the central figure are various symbols of the trade: a broken Ionic capital lies at the base, while a pair of compasses and a set square rest on the ground, indicating the mathematical precision necessary for construction. In the background, a distant fortress and landscape elements provide a sense of scale and context, grounding the allegorical figure in a tangible environment. The print is executed with a high degree of technical skill, employing fine cross-hatching to create depth and volume in the musculature of the putto and the texture of the stone elements.
Bonato, who was active in Rome, produced this work after a design by Ludovico Stern. The inscription at the bottom identifies the subject and includes a dedication to the Marchese de Livron. The print reflects the period's fascination with classical antiquity and the systematic study of architectural principles. The use of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, is managed with precision, drawing the viewer's eye to the architectural drawing held by the figure. This piece serves as a clear example of the mid-eighteenth-century Italian printmaking tradition, where allegorical subjects were frequently used to elevate technical and professional disciplines through classical iconography.
