A detailed religious narrative by Aurelio Lomi, depicting the biblical gathering of manna within a dramatic lunette composition.
Aurelio Lomi, a Pisan painter active during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, produced this composition depicting the biblical narrative of the Israelites gathering manna in the wilderness. The scene is organised within a lunette format, a common architectural constraint for ecclesiastical commissions of the period. The lower register is populated by numerous figures engaged in the collection of the divine sustenance, their postures varied to create a sense of movement and human activity across the foreground.
Above the encampment, the composition transitions into a celestial realm. Angels are depicted in flight, pouring manna from vessels, while two larger, seated figures frame the upper corners of the arch. This division between the terrestrial gathering and the heavenly source is a characteristic device of the era, intended to guide the viewer from the mundane act of survival to the spiritual origin of the miracle. Lomi employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, which helps to define the volume of the figures and the depth of the encampment. The tents in the background provide a sense of scale, suggesting the vastness of the desert setting.
Lomi was a contemporary of the Tuscan Mannerist tradition, and his work reflects the stylistic tendencies of the time, including elongated forms and a focus on complex, multi-layered narratives. The painting demonstrates a clear command of perspective and anatomical proportion, typical of the training received by artists in the orbit of the Florentine and Pisan schools. This print captures the tonal range of the original work, allowing for a clear appreciation of the artist's draftsmanship and the narrative structure of the scene. It remains a representative example of the religious art produced for private or public devotion in early modern Italy.
