A pair of six-panel folding screens by Kano Tan'yū, featuring seasonal transitions rendered in traditional ink wash on paper.
Kano Tan'yū, a central figure of the Kano school during the early Edo period, produced this work as a pair of six-panel folding screens. The composition employs the traditional ink wash technique known as sumi-e, which relies on the modulation of ink density to create atmospheric depth. The screens depict a sequence of seasonal transitions, moving through the cyclical nature of the environment.
Tan'yū utilised a restrained palette of monochrome ink, allowing the negative space of the paper to represent mist, water, and sky. This technique, often referred to as 'yohaku', directs the viewer's attention to the specific placement of architectural elements, craggy rock formations, and sparse vegetation. The brushwork demonstrates the artist's technical control, shifting between precise, calligraphic lines for buildings and softer, blurred washes for the distant mountains.
The screens reflect the aesthetic values of the Tokugawa shogunate, which favoured the disciplined, scholarly approach of the Kano school. By organising the imagery across twelve panels, Tan'yū creates a narrative flow that encourages the viewer to scan the scene from right to left, following the progression of time and weather. The inclusion of small figures in boats and structures nestled within the terrain provides a sense of scale, grounding the ethereal atmosphere in human activity. This work remains a clear example of the Kano school's ability to balance decorative composition with the philosophical weight of traditional ink painting. The paper surface, aged to a warm, muted tone, provides a neutral ground that unifies the various elements of the scene, ensuring that the focus remains on the interplay of light and shadow.
