A refined depiction of the Four Accomplishments, capturing scholars engaged in music, board games, calligraphy, and painting within a serene garden setting.
This work depicts the traditional Four Accomplishments: the zither (qin), the board game (go), calligraphy, and painting. These activities were considered essential pursuits for the cultivated scholar in East Asian tradition. Iwasa Matabei, a figure associated with the transition from the Momoyama to the early Edo period, presents these figures within a domestic setting, framed by architectural elements and a large, sweeping pine tree. The composition balances the structured interior space where the board game and zither are played, against the more fluid, naturalistic exterior where calligraphy and painting occur.
Matabei is often credited with developing the Ukiyo-e style, though his work retains a distinct connection to the Tosa school of painting. His figures possess a specific physical character, often featuring elongated faces and expressive postures that depart from the more rigid conventions of his contemporaries. The colour palette remains muted, relying on earth tones and subtle washes to define the forms. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden hue, which unifies the various elements of the scene. The interaction between the figures is quiet and focused, reflecting the meditative nature of their tasks. This piece offers a glimpse into the social and intellectual life of the period, where leisure was defined by artistic and strategic discipline. The inclusion of the pine tree provides a vertical anchor to the composition, contrasting with the horizontal lines of the wooden veranda. Through his careful handling of ink and pigment, Matabei captures a moment of scholarly repose, demonstrating his ability to blend narrative detail with a refined, decorative sensibility.
