A detailed seventeenth-century ink and wash study of the Roman Forum ruins by Dutch master Pieter Lastman.
This drawing by Pieter Lastman captures the ruins of the Forum of Nerva in Rome as they appeared in the early seventeenth century. Lastman, a Dutch painter known for his historical subjects, travelled to Italy between 1604 and 1607. During this period, he produced a series of sketches documenting the classical antiquities of the city. This work demonstrates his interest in the physical reality of Roman architecture, moving away from the purely imaginative reconstructions common in the period.
The composition focuses on the remnants of the Temple of Minerva, specifically the standing column and the adjacent wall structures. Lastman employs a delicate use of pen and brown ink, supplemented by washes to define the shadows cast by the crumbling masonry. The inclusion of small figures and a cart in the foreground provides a sense of scale, grounding the monumental ruins in the daily life of the contemporary city. The vegetation clinging to the tops of the stone structures suggests the slow reclamation of these sites by nature, a theme frequently explored by Northern European artists visiting the Mediterranean.
As a preparatory study, the drawing reveals the artist's process of observation. The lines are precise, capturing the texture of weathered stone and the structural decay of the site. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic training of the Dutch Golden Age, where direct study of classical sites informed the development of historical painting. The work is currently held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, reflecting its value as a record of both the site and the artistic practices of the era.
