A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Pietro del Po depicting the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt, guided by an angel.
This etching by the Italian artist Pietro del Po depicts the biblical narrative of the Flight into Egypt. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the Holy Family, with Joseph leading a donkey while Mary carries the infant Jesus. An angel hovers above, gesturing towards their destination, while a secondary figure rests in the background. Del Po, a painter and printmaker active in Rome and Naples, demonstrates a clear command of the etching medium, using varied line weights to define the drapery of the figures and the textures of the surrounding environment.
The scene is constructed with a sense of theatrical movement characteristic of the Baroque period. The figures are arranged in a shallow stage-like space, framed by architectural elements on the right and rugged, rocky terrain on the left. The artist employs cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly within the folds of the garments and the shaded areas of the landscape. The interaction between the figures is fluid, with the angel providing a sense of divine guidance that contrasts with the weary, earthly journey of the Holy Family.
Pietro del Po was known for his ability to translate complex narratives into clear, readable graphic works. His style often reflects the influence of his contemporaries in the Roman art scene, balancing classical proportions with the dramatic light and shadow effects favoured during the seventeenth century. This print offers a view into the technical practices of the era, where etching served as a primary method for disseminating religious imagery to a wider audience. The work remains a fine example of the period's focus on narrative clarity and anatomical precision, presented through the disciplined application of the etching needle.
