A detailed depiction of the execution of the corrupt judge Sisamnes, painted by Gerard David for the Bruges town hall in 1498.
Gerard David painted this work as part of a diptych commissioned for the town hall of Bruges. The subject originates from the Histories of Herodotus, which recounts the tale of Sisamnes, a corrupt judge who accepted a bribe. King Cambyses of Persia ordered his arrest and execution. The scene depicts the grim punishment of flaying, intended to serve as a warning to other magistrates regarding the necessity of impartial justice.
David employs a precise, clinical approach to the composition. The figures are arranged in a shallow, stage-like space, allowing the viewer to observe the anatomical details and the expressions of the participants. The artist uses a muted palette, which contrasts with the stark red of the judge's discarded robes and the bloodied skin. The architectural setting, featuring a paved courtyard and a distant building, provides a sense of order that clashes with the violent act occurring on the central table.
This panel is notable for its technical control and the realistic rendering of textures, from the fabric of the onlookers' garments to the skin of the condemned man. David avoids excessive emotionalism, opting instead for a detached, documentary style that focuses on the legal and moral implications of the narrative. The work remains a significant example of Northern Renaissance painting, reflecting the period's interest in civic duty and the application of law. The figures surrounding the table represent various social classes, each reacting to the event with a different level of engagement or indifference, which adds a layer of psychological complexity to the scene.
