A satirical lithograph by Louis-Léopold Boilly depicting the five senses through a group of expressive, character-driven figures.
Louis-Léopold Boilly was a keen observer of Parisian life, known for his ability to capture the nuances of human expression and social behaviour. In this lithograph, titled Les cinq sens, he presents a humorous, allegorical study of the human sensory experience. The composition is tightly packed, featuring five distinct figures clustered together, each representing one of the five senses through exaggerated physical actions.
One figure peers through a monocle to represent sight, while another holds a pocket watch to his ear, signifying hearing. A young woman delicately sniffs a small object, embodying smell, while a central figure tastes a morsel from a dish. The final figure, positioned at the base, reaches out to touch the hand of another, completing the sensory cycle. Boilly employs a satirical tone, common in his later graphic works, which often poked fun at the bourgeoisie and the eccentricities of his contemporaries.
The print demonstrates Boilly's technical skill in lithography, a medium he adopted with enthusiasm during the 1820s. The hand-colouring adds a layer of warmth to the figures, drawing attention to their varied expressions and the specific objects they interact with. The background remains plain, ensuring the focus stays entirely on the interaction between the subjects. This work provides a window into the popular visual culture of early nineteenth-century France, where such prints were widely circulated and enjoyed for their wit and observational accuracy. Boilly's work remains a primary source for understanding the social dynamics and fashion of the period, presented with a light-hearted, satirical edge that avoids heavy moralising.
