Kenneth Hayes Miller, a central figure in the Fourteenth Street School, produced The Fitting Room in 1931. This work captures a mundane moment of urban commerce during the interwar period. Miller often focused his attention on the daily lives of women in New York City, specifically within the context of department stores and shopping districts. The composition presents a group of women in a confined, interior space, engaged in the act of trying on garments.
The figures possess a sculptural, rounded quality, a stylistic trait Miller developed through his study of Renaissance masters. He applied this classical approach to contemporary subjects, creating a sense of weight and volume that distinguishes his work from the flatter styles of his contemporaries. The scene is organised around the central figure in a yellow dress, who is being assisted by a saleswoman.
