An early seventeenth-century etching by Antonio Tempesta depicting the mythological fall of Icarus, featuring precise line work and narrative detail.
This etching by Antonio Tempesta depicts the tragic conclusion of the Greek myth of Icarus. Tempesta, a prolific printmaker and painter based in Rome, was known for his technical skill in capturing movement and narrative drama. This work forms part of a larger series illustrating Ovid's Metamorphoses, a common source of inspiration for artists of the period.
The composition is divided into two distinct actions. On the left, Daedalus flies steadily with his wax wings, his posture suggesting a controlled, purposeful flight. In contrast, Icarus is shown on the right in a state of descent, his wings failing as feathers scatter into the sea below. The sun, positioned in the upper right, acts as the catalyst for this catastrophe, with rays radiating across the sky. A solitary tower stands in the middle ground, providing a sense of scale and distance from the shore.
Tempesta employs a dense system of cross-hatching to define the forms and create shadow. The lines are precise, characteristic of his training in the Florentine tradition. The sea is rendered with rhythmic, horizontal strokes that suggest the turbulence of the water. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, 'Daedalus Icaro alta nimis ambienti orbatur', provides the viewer with the specific narrative context of the scene. This print demonstrates the artist's ability to condense complex mythological narratives into a single, readable frame. The work remains a fine example of early seventeenth-century printmaking, where the focus was on clarity of line and the effective communication of classical stories to a literate audience.
