A delicate etching by the Italian Mannerist master Parmigianino, depicting the Entombment of Christ with characteristic elongated figures and fluid, calligraphic lines.
This etching, attributed to the Italian Mannerist painter and printmaker Parmigianino, depicts the Entombment of Christ. The composition is characteristic of the artist's style, featuring elongated figures and a sense of fluid, restless motion. The central figure of Christ is laid out horizontally, his body rendered with a delicate, sinuous grace that avoids the rigid anatomical precision of the High Renaissance. Surrounding him, the mourners are arranged in a tight, compressed space, their expressions and gestures conveying a quiet, internalised grief rather than overt theatricality.
Parmigianino was one of the first Italian artists to experiment with etching, a technique that allowed him to translate the spontaneity of his drawings directly onto the metal plate. The line quality here is calligraphic and light, creating a sense of atmospheric depth despite the relatively shallow pictorial space. The hatching is used to model the forms and suggest the play of light across the figures, contributing to the overall ethereal quality of the scene. The background is kept minimal, allowing the focus to remain entirely on the interaction between the figures and the physical weight of the deceased Christ.
This work reflects the broader shift in sixteenth-century Italian art towards subjective expression and stylistic artifice. By distorting proportions and prioritising grace over naturalism, Parmigianino creates a scene that feels both intimate and otherworldly. The print demonstrates his mastery of the etching needle, showing how he could achieve subtle tonal variations through varying the density of his lines. It remains a fine example of the technical and aesthetic innovations that defined the Mannerist period, offering a glimpse into the creative process of one of the most influential figures of the Italian Renaissance.
