A detailed Renaissance engraving depicting the burial of Christ, featuring expressive figures and a Latin inscription on a central sarcophagus.
This engraving by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia depicts the burial of Christ, a subject frequently explored by artists of the Italian Renaissance. The composition is organised around a central stone sarcophagus, which bears the Latin inscription 'HVMANI GENERIS REDEMPTORI', meaning 'To the Redeemer of the Human Race'. The figures surrounding the body of Christ display varied expressions of grief, with the Virgin Mary collapsing in the foreground and other mourners gathered in a tight, emotive group.
Giovanni Antonio da Brescia was an active engraver in Northern Italy, and his work often reflects the influence of Andrea Mantegna. The treatment of the drapery, with its sharp, angular folds, and the rocky, barren background are characteristic of the period's printmaking techniques. The three crosses visible on the distant hill provide a clear narrative link to the preceding events of the Crucifixion. The artist employs a system of parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume within the figures despite the two-dimensional nature of the medium.
This print demonstrates the technical precision required for early copperplate engraving. The artist manages the spatial arrangement by placing the primary action in the mid-ground, while the landscape elements remain secondary to the human drama. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical structure, typical of the artistic concerns of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. This work is a representative example of how religious themes were disseminated through the medium of print, allowing for the wider circulation of complex iconographic scenes among collectors and scholars of the era.
