A dramatic Mannerist depiction of the Entombment by Giorgio Vasari, featuring complex figure arrangements and deep, atmospheric shadows.
Giorgio Vasari, primarily known for his historical documentation of Renaissance artists, was also a prolific painter. This work, The Entombment, displays the stylistic hallmarks of the Mannerist period. The composition is crowded, with figures packed into the frame to create a sense of urgency and emotional weight. Vasari employs a complex arrangement of bodies, using elongated limbs and contorted poses to guide the viewer's eye across the scene.
The lighting is dramatic, with deep shadows that obscure the background and focus attention on the central figures. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the specific colour choices of the drapery, which add a sense of movement to the static figures. The central figure of Christ is depicted with a focus on anatomical precision, a common trait in Vasari's work, which reflects his training and his interest in the classical tradition. The surrounding figures exhibit varied expressions of grief, rendered with a focus on individual characterisation rather than idealised beauty.
This painting demonstrates the shift away from the balanced, harmonious compositions of the High Renaissance. Instead, Vasari opts for a more artificial and stylised approach, prioritising the expressive potential of the human form. The figures appear to occupy a shallow space, pushing against the front of the picture plane. This technique creates a sense of proximity, drawing the viewer into the narrative. The work remains a clear example of the mid-sixteenth-century Italian approach to religious iconography, where technical skill and stylistic artifice are combined to convey a sombre, devotional subject.
