A moody, atmospheric drypoint etching by Henri Boutet, capturing a solitary figure on a Parisian street at night in 1899.
Henri Boutet, often referred to as the master of the Parisian woman, captures the atmosphere of the city at the close of the nineteenth century in this drypoint and etching. The work depicts a solitary female figure walking through a dimly lit street, her silhouette rendered in deep, velvety blacks that contrast with the soft, diffused glow of gas lamps. Boutet was well known for his ability to convey the mood of the Belle Époque, focusing on the fashion and social habits of the Parisian bourgeoisie and the demi-monde.
The composition relies on the interplay between shadow and light, a technique that allows the artist to suggest the damp, nocturnal environment of a Parisian boulevard without the need for excessive detail. The figure, dressed in the high-collared fashion of the period, stands as a quiet observer of the urban environment. In the background, the faint outline of a gentleman in a top hat and the presence of a Morris column provide context, grounding the scene in the specific reality of late 1890s Paris.
Boutet utilised the drypoint medium to achieve the soft, atmospheric quality of the night. The burr of the drypoint needle creates lines that appear to bleed into the paper, mimicking the hazy effect of street lamps through fog or darkness. This print reflects the artist's interest in the fleeting moments of urban life, a common theme among printmakers of the era who sought to document the changing character of the city. The work is signed and dated 1899, placing it at the height of Boutet's career as a chronicler of Parisian life. It remains a representative example of the graphic arts produced in France during this period, demonstrating a mastery of tone and atmospheric perspective.
