A detailed 16th-century engraving by Philips Galle, depicting a solemn scene of final rites with expressive figures and symbolic depth.
This engraving, executed by the Dutch master Philips Galle, depicts a scene of final rites, often identified as The Dying Hour. The composition is circular, a format frequently utilised in Northern Renaissance printmaking to contain complex narrative scenes. The work is based on a design by Maarten van Heemskerck, whose influence is visible in the muscular, expressive figures and the dramatic use of light and shadow.
At the centre of the composition, a dying figure lies in bed, surrounded by attendants and a cleric performing religious rites. The scene is charged with moral weight, typical of the period's preoccupation with the transience of life and the necessity of spiritual preparation. The figures are arranged in a manner that directs the eye toward the central candle, which serves as a symbol of the soul's departure. The surrounding space is filled with domestic and liturgical objects, rendered with precision to ground the allegorical subject in a tangible reality.
The Latin inscription encircling the image provides a commentary on the inevitability of death, reinforcing the didactic nature of the print. Galle's technical skill is evident in the varied line work, which creates a sense of volume and texture in the drapery and the architectural elements of the room. The contrast between the dark interior and the illuminated figures creates a sense of theatre, drawing the viewer into the solemnity of the moment. This print offers a clear window into the visual culture of the sixteenth-century Netherlands, where religious themes were frequently explored through the medium of the printed image to reach a wider audience. It remains a fine example of the collaborative process between designer and engraver during this era.
