This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition focuses on the Kanda district, a centre for textile production in nineteenth-century Edo. Hiroshige employs a bold, unconventional perspective by placing long strips of dyed fabric in the immediate foreground. These cloths hang from wooden frames to dry, creating vertical lines that dominate the visual field. The fabric patterns, featuring geometric motifs and indigo gradients, contrast with the distant, serene silhouette of Mount Fuji.
The artist uses the drying cloths as a framing device, drawing the eye through the foreground and into the urban sprawl below. The colour palette relies on the characteristic indigo blues of the period, balanced by the soft pinks and greys of the horizon at dawn or dusk. The sky transitions from a deep, saturated tone at the top to a lighter hue near the mountain, a technique known as bokashi. This method of colour gradation demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hiroshige.
Kanda was known for its concentration of dyers, and this image provides a glimpse into the daily industry of the city.
