Jean-Léon Gérôme, a prominent figure of the French Academic school, completed this work in 1857. It depicts the immediate aftermath of a duel occurring in the Bois de Boulogne. The scene is set against a bleak, wintry backdrop, where the grey, misty atmosphere emphasises the isolation of the figures.

The composition is divided into two distinct groups. On the left, a man dressed as Pierrot collapses into the arms of his second, while a third figure in a dark cloak looks on. The stark white of the Pierrot costume contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the surrounding snow and trees. On the right, the victor and his second depart the scene, their figures receding into the fog. A discarded sword lies on the snow in the foreground, acting as a quiet indicator of the violence that has just concluded.

Gérôme was known for his technical precision and his ability to construct highly theatrical narratives. This painting demonstrates his mastery of light and shadow, as well as his attention to historical detail. The choice of a masquerade theme adds a layer of irony to the tragedy, as the colourful, festive attire of the participants clashes with the grim reality of the death. The painting was well received at the 1857 Paris Salon, where it was praised for its dramatic composition and emotional restraint. It remains a representative example of 19th-century French painting, reflecting the period's interest in historical and literary subjects rendered with polished, realistic technique.
