This study of the Ducal Palace demonstrates his meticulous approach to observation. Ruskin prioritised the accurate rendering of stone textures, the specific geometry of the Gothic arches, and the sculptural detail of the capitals. His technique combines precise graphite underdrawing with washes of watercolour, allowing him to capture the play of light across the colonnade.
In this composition, the viewer is positioned within the loggia, looking out towards the structure of the palace. The repetition of the columns creates a rhythmic perspective, drawing the eye along the arcade. Ruskin avoids broad, atmospheric effects in favour of clarity.
