Beskrivning
A striking 1908 lithograph by Oskar Kokoschka, featuring elongated figures and bold, graphic colour blocks in an early Expressionist style.
The Dreaming Boys (Die träumenden Knaben) is a seminal work from the early career of Oskar Kokoschka. Originally conceived as a children's book, the project was commissioned by the Wiener Werkstätte and published in 1908. This specific image reflects the artist's transition from the decorative influence of the Vienna Secession toward the raw, psychological intensity that defined his later Expressionist output.
The composition features two slender, pale figures positioned within a flattened, dreamlike environment. Kokoschka employs a restricted palette of ochre, deep green, and a striking, saturated orange that bisects the frame. The figures are rendered with thin, deliberate outlines, their elongated forms echoing the stylised aesthetic of the period. Two yellow birds appear to float or descend through the central orange passage, adding to the sense of suspended animation. The background consists of simplified, rhythmic hills and sparse vegetation, which avoids traditional perspective in favour of a decorative, graphic arrangement.
Kokoschka's approach to the human form here is notably fragile. The figures possess a vulnerability that contrasts with the bold, flat areas of colour. The work demonstrates the artist's early interest in the subconscious and the internal states of his subjects. By stripping away realistic detail, he focuses on the symbolic weight of the scene. This print captures the intersection of Jugendstil design principles and the emerging subjective vision of the Austrian avant-garde. It remains a clear example of the graphic experimentation occurring in Vienna at the turn of the century, where book illustration served as a primary vehicle for artistic innovation.

Artist Biography
Oskar Kokoschka
Kokoschka proposed to Alma Mahler within twenty-four hours of meeting her in 1912. When she later had an abortion, he pocketed a bloodied cotton pad from the procedure, saying it was his only child and always would be. He painted The Bride of the Wind (1913-14) as a double portrait of the two of them, then sold it to buy his own horse before volunteering for the First World War.
He was born in 1886 in Pochlarn, Austria. He was shot through the head in Ukraine and bayoneted in the chest in Russia. He survived both.
After the war, he commissioned a Munich dollmaker named Hermine Moos to create a life-size replica of Alma, sending detailed instructions about the feel of her skin and the weight of her body. Moos covered the figure in feathers instead. Kokoschka eventually staged a public execution: he decapitated the doll and smashed a bottle of wine over its head on his lawn. The police arrived the next morning, thinking he had murdered a woman.
The Nazis declared him a degenerate artist. He fled Czechoslovakia for London after the Munich Agreement and became a British citizen in 1947. His Expressionist portraits are among the most psychologically penetrating of the twentieth century: raw, agitated surfaces that seem to expose the sitter's interior state. He lived to ninety-four.
