A detailed 17th-century engraving by François de Poilly (I) depicting the Descent from the Cross with dramatic Baroque lighting and precise line work.
This engraving by François de Poilly (I) depicts the biblical scene of the Descent from the Cross. The composition follows the conventions of 17th-century French printmaking, where the artist translates the dramatic tension of a painted original into the precise, linear language of the burin. The central figures are arranged around the body of Christ, which is being lowered from the cross with careful, measured movements. To the right, a mounted figure provides a sense of scale and historical context, while the mourning figures at the base of the cross establish the emotional gravity of the event.
Poilly was a master of the reproductive print, a practice that allowed works by major painters to reach a wider audience across Europe. His technique relies on a system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to suggest the texture of fabric, the musculature of the figures, and the atmospheric quality of the scene. The Latin inscription at the base, 'O vos qui transitis per viam attendite et videte, si est dolor sicut dolor meus', draws from the Book of Lamentations, framing the image as a devotional object intended for contemplation.
The lighting in the print is theatrical, typical of the Baroque period, with strong contrasts between the illuminated figures and the darker, atmospheric background. This approach directs the viewer's eye toward the central action of the deposition. The print demonstrates the technical rigour required in the 17th century to replicate the tonal range of oil painting through black and white lines alone. As a fine art print, this work offers a clear view into the methods of the period, where the engraver acted as both a craftsman and an interpreter of religious iconography.
