This painting by Cornelis Beelt depicts the historical departure of King Charles II of England from the Dutch coastal village of Scheveningen on 2 June 1660. The event marked the end of the King's exile and his return to England to reclaim the throne. Beelt, a painter active in Haarlem, specialised in scenes of daily life and coastal views, often capturing the specific atmosphere of the Dutch shoreline.

The composition is dominated by the expansive, cloudy sky typical of Dutch marine painting, which occupies the upper two-thirds of the canvas.
