Beskrivning
A conceptual Surrealist work by René Magritte, featuring an empty frame labelled 'PAYSAGE' alongside a hunting rifle, questioning the nature of representation.
René Magritte painted The Delights of Landscape in 1928, a period during which he explored the relationship between objects, their names, and the act of representation. The composition features a simple wooden frame resting on a surface, with a small label at the bottom bearing the word 'PAYSAGE'. Beside the frame stands a hunting rifle. The background is divided into two stark vertical planes of black and red, creating a theatrical, stage-like environment.
Magritte uses this work to question the nature of art and perception. By placing a label that identifies the empty space within the frame as a 'landscape', he forces the viewer to confront the gap between a linguistic signifier and the physical reality of the canvas. The rifle, a recurring object in Magritte's iconography, introduces a sense of tension and potential violence, contrasting with the stillness of the frame. The painting avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, graphic arrangement that emphasises the artificiality of the scene.
This piece is characteristic of Magritte's analytical approach to Surrealism. He does not rely on dream-like distortion or fluid forms, but rather on the precise, almost clinical arrangement of mundane objects to unsettle the viewer's expectations. The deliberate simplicity of the composition allows the conceptual irony to take precedence. The work functions as a visual paradox, where the title and the label claim to show a landscape, yet the viewer is presented only with the tools of observation and the void of the frame itself. It remains a clear example of the artist's interest in the arbitrary nature of language and the limitations of visual representation.

The Delights of Landscape - René Magritte
Artist Biography
Rene Magritte
He grew up in Lessines, Belgium. His mother drowned herself in the River Sambre when he was thirteen; her body was found with her nightdress wrapped around her face. Whether this explains the recurring covered faces in his paintings is a question biographers have insisted on and Magritte consistently refused to answer.
He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and spent several years working as a commercial artist and wallpaper designer. The commercial work is relevant: his painting technique is deliberately flat, illustrative, and impersonal. There are no visible brushstrokes, no evidence of struggle. The surfaces look like advertisements for impossible things. He painted in a small room in his house, wearing a suit, with his easel next to the living room furniture.
He was a Surrealist but not the Parisian variety. He disliked Breton's intellectualising and preferred to work from home in Brussels. His version of Surrealism was cooler and more logical: ordinary objects placed in wrong contexts, familiar things made strange through simple displacement. A rock floating in the sky. An apple covering a face. A train emerging from a fireplace. Each painting poses a single visual problem and leaves you to solve it.
He made relatively few paintings compared to his contemporaries. Each one is self-contained. He did not develop through phases or wrestle with form. He found his approach early and refined it quietly for decades.
