A quintessential Rococo scene depicting a romantic courtship in a formal garden, capturing the refined fashions and social rituals of the French aristocracy.
Jean-François de Troy painted The Declaration of Love in 1731, capturing the refined social rituals of the French aristocracy during the early eighteenth century. This work is a quintessential example of the Rococo style, which favoured lighthearted subjects, soft colour palettes, and an emphasis on leisure and courtship. The scene is set in a manicured garden, a common backdrop for the period, where a group of elegantly dressed figures engages in conversation and flirtation.
At the centre of the composition, a man kneels before a woman, offering her a small bouquet of flowers. This gesture of romantic supplication is observed by other members of the party, who are positioned around them in a relaxed, conversational arrangement. The artist pays close attention to the textures of the clothing, from the shimmering silk of the woman's gown to the elaborate embroidery on the men's coats. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace and poise, reflecting the social codes of the time.
The background features a stone balustrade and a classical statue, elements that provide a sense of structure to the outdoor setting. The soft, diffused light suggests a late afternoon, adding to the atmosphere of quiet intimacy. De Troy was a master of these 'tableaux de mode', which documented the fashions and social habits of the Parisian elite. By focusing on the nuances of human interaction and the display of material wealth, the painting offers a glimpse into the private lives of the upper classes. The composition balances the central narrative of the declaration with the surrounding figures, creating a cohesive scene that feels both staged and natural. The work remains a primary reference for understanding the aesthetic and social values of the French Rococo period.
